Chapter 9: Hongdou

“Hurry and go hail a taxi for me!” Yu Wan didn't have a car. Her driver's license had been gathering dust at home. Now, with no one around, she could only ask these three children.

The three children were too scared to move.

“Can't you see it's bleeding! Go!”

The three children looked like they wanted to run. Yu Wan yelled angrily, “There are surveillance cameras everywhere. If you dare to run, I'll call the police and have you all arrested!”

After all, they were just children. A little intimidation, coupled with the mention of the police, was enough to scare them. The oldest, a girl, frowned. “Sister, I'm really sorry. Can you promise not to tell our parents and not to call the police… Otherwise, my little brother will be scolded. If, if you promise, I'll go find a car.”

Yu Wan's eyes darkened. “Your brother will be scolded? Is that really important right now?! If you don't go, believe me, I'll cut your brother too!”

The boy immediately shrank behind the girl in fear. The three of them had been playing with the dog. He had just returned from art class, so he had a utility knife in his bag. The boy was always getting into trouble. Seeing the dog, his playful nature took over, and he took out the knife to scare it. But he didn't expect the dog to struggle. The knife slipped, and because it was so sharp, blood immediately gushed out…

Hearing Yu Wan's words and seeing her expression, the girl's intuition told her that if she didn't do as asked, this person might actually hurt her brother. She gritted her teeth, thinking she would find a car first and then have her parents deal with the situation later.

Cars couldn't enter the area, so the girl ran to the entrance of the residential complex and hailed a taxi. Yu Wan struggled to lift Hongdou onto her back. Hongdou was a large dog, very heavy, and carrying him was extremely difficult for Yu Wan. But she had no choice. Gritting her teeth, she carried Hongdou to the taxi outside.

The driver waited for a while, then saw the blood-covered Yu Wan and the two large dogs. He was stunned. “Li-Little girl, what is this…”

“To the nearest animal hospital!”

“So much blood, this…”

“I'll give you triple the fare, just drive!”

“…Okay, okay.”

Along the way, Hongdou whimpered, lying on Yu Wan's lap. Diandian crouched beside them, the whole dog looking distressed. Yu Wan's hands were still trembling. She pursed her lips, her eyes fixed on Hongdou.

The smell of blood was strong. Hongdou must be in a lot of pain. Yu Wan's heart ached terribly.

She didn't know how to explain this to Shen Qingzhou. She didn't dare call him, didn't dare to hear his voice. Hongdou was Shen Qingzhou's precious pet. He had entrusted the dog to her, but she hadn't taken good care of it, allowing it to be so badly injured. Guilt washed over her. Yu Wan's eyes reddened, and tears gradually blurred her vision.

Yu Wan couldn't remember the last time she cried. She rarely cried, but now, overwhelmed by guilt and heartache, once the tears started, they wouldn't stop. The driver looked at them through the rearview mirror and saw Yu Wan crying so hard. He couldn't help but offer comfort. “Little girl, don't cry. We'll be at the hospital soon.”

Yu Wan raised her hand and wiped her tears. “What should I do… Shen, Shen Qingzhou…”

Her voice was muffled, and the driver didn't understand what she was saying, so he just accelerated. “Five more minutes, don't be afraid, little girl.”

Yu Wan whimpered, trying hard to hold back her sobs.

Finally, they arrived at the hospital. Yu Wan quickly carried Hongdou out. “Diandian, follow me!”

Diandian obediently followed behind. From the moment they got out of the car to the hospital entrance, everyone stared at Yu Wan in shock. A slender girl carrying a large, injured dog, her white dress mostly stained with blood, the sight was terrifying.

At the hospital entrance, a veterinarian rushed over.

“A knife wound, Doctor, please look!” Yu Wan said anxiously.

“Put him here.”

Hongdou was taken into the operating room, surrounded by several doctors. Watching Hongdou disappear, Yu Wan collapsed onto a chair outside, as if all her strength had drained away. She buried her face in her hands and wept openly.

After a long time, Yu Wan took out her phone and stared at the name "Shen Qingzhou" in her contacts. She gritted her teeth and finally pressed the call button.

“Hello.”

The familiar, cold voice. Yu Wan pressed her lips together, afraid that if she spoke, he would hear how distraught she was.

“Yu Wan?”

“Mr. Shen.”

“What is it?”

Yu Wan took a deep breath, truly not knowing how to explain.

Shen Qingzhou, hearing Yu Wan's silence, felt something was wrong. “What's wrong? Speak.”

Yu Wan clutched her skirt, finally speaking in a hoarse voice, “Shen Qingzhou, come back…”

“Dad, it's this sister.”

“Miss, Miss?”

Someone tapped her shoulder. Yu Wan slowly raised her head. Her clothes were stained with blood, and there were bloodstains on her face from wiping her tears. The person who approached was startled by Yu Wan's appearance.

Yu Wan's gaze rested on the brother and sister for a moment, then she looked at the two adults. “Is something the matter?”

“This… My child injured your dog. I heard about it and came to apologize.” The man said, looking embarrassed.

Yu Wan gave a noncommittal hum but didn't speak.

The man felt awkward. “Um, how much will the treatment cost? I'll take care of it.”

Yu Wan glanced at him. “Your child needs discipline, and he needs to apologize to Hongdou.”

As soon as Yu Wan said this, the woman standing slightly behind the man became displeased. “It's just a dog. We'll compensate you. Why apologize? It doesn't even understand.”

Just a dog??

Yu Wan's eyes narrowed as she looked directly at the woman. “To me, Hongdou is like my child. Madam, you have children. If it were your child injured like this, I wonder if you could still speak so casually.”

“You…”

“If you don't let your child sincerely apologize, how will he learn his lesson? This time, his knife was aimed at Hongdou. Next time, what do you think he'll aim it at?”

If the other party weren't a child but an adult, Yu Wan wouldn't have hesitated to confront and argue with him. Now, his mother was saying such callous things. Yu Wan felt a surge of anger.

The woman scoffed. “Really? I heard Duoduo say you threatened her, claiming you would hurt my son. I think it was your knife that was ready to be used on a person.”

“Stop talking!” The man scolded the woman, then turned to Yu Wan. “Look…”

“There's no need. Since you're not sincere, you can leave!” Yu Wan said coldly. “Sir, it seems it's not just your child who needs discipline; your wife seems to need it as well.”

The woman immediately jumped to her feet. “What did you say! Such a sharp tongue for a young girl!”

“Don't cause a scene here!”

“You're taking her side, aren't you? Is it because she's young and pretty?!”

“Shut up!”

Yu Wan watched them coldly, no longer interested in speaking.

“Yu Wan.” Amidst the commotion, that voice was particularly distinct and pleasant.

Yu Wan slowly turned to look at the newcomer, her throat choked, unable to speak. He stood not far away, a refined and otherworldly presence, attracting the attention of everyone around.

A single tear rolled down Yu Wan's cheek, falling directly to the ground. She was sad, and even more so, guilt-ridden.

Shen Qingzhou rushed to the scene to find this chaotic situation. He called Yu Wan's name and saw her turn to him.

Disheveled, the bloodstains on her white dress were particularly glaring, the tear tracks and bloodstains on her face intertwined, a shocking sight. Shen Qingzhou felt an inexplicable tightness in his chest. He frowned and walked towards her.

Yu Wan slowly stood up, a little at a loss. “Hongdou, Hongdou is inside. The doctor is stitching him up…”

“Don’t cry.” Shen Qingzhou subconsciously reached out to wipe the tears from her face. His fingertips were instantly stained with blood. He frowned and wiped the blood off her face again. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine. This is all Hongdou’s blood…” Yu Wan had no time to celebrate Shen Qingzhou's initiative in touching her. She lowered her head, her voice hoarse. “Mr. Shen, I’m sorry… I’m really sorry. It’s my fault for not looking after Hongdou properly.”

Shen Qingzhou glanced at the operating room behind him, his gaze heavy. Then he looked at her again and patted her shoulder somewhat awkwardly. “Don’t talk about that now. Go home and clean yourself up. I’ll handle this.”

Yu Wan looked at Shen Qingzhou blankly. Shen Qingzhou didn't say anything more, but instead used his eyes to inquire who these people next to Yu Wan were.

Understanding, Yu Wan said, “These are the little boy’s family.” She had already explained the whole story to Shen Qingzhou on the phone, so he knew what had happened with the little boy.

Shen Qingzhou shifted his gaze to the family. His gaze was so cold that the two children unconsciously hid behind their parents.

From the moment he appeared, the woman had recognized him. Her family was relatively well-off, and she usually spent her time chatting with other wealthy wives, watching TV and movies… She was quite familiar with celebrities, and she knew even more about Shen Qingzhou. She had seen many of the films he directed.

The woman never imagined that the injured dog was Shen Qingzhou's beloved pet. She said ingratiatingly, “Director Shen, I’m so sorry. My child…”

“Don’t you think your child needs discipline?” Shen Qingzhou suddenly said in a deep voice.

The woman froze, realizing he had heard what she had said to Yu Wan earlier. “This… What my child did was indeed wrong, but it was an accident. This girl also said she wanted to retaliate against my son. Isn't that going too far?”

“Retaliate.” Shen Qingzhou said coldly. “She’s right. A knife for a knife, perfectly reasonable.”

The woman’s eyes widened, seemingly unable to believe these words came from Shen Qingzhou.

Yu Wan, standing beside him, also stared at him blankly. Was he also making threats??

“Young man.” After speaking, Shen Qingzhou didn't look at the woman again. He spoke directly to the little boy. “Why did you do this?”

“Mr. Shen, he’s still young, he doesn’t understand.” The woman quickly replied.

“I wasn’t asking you.” Shen Qingzhou glanced indifferently at the woman, his gaze carrying a heavy sense of oppression. The woman awkwardly shut her mouth.

“Speak.”

The little boy was terrified. Earlier, with his family present and only Yu Wan on the other side, he hadn't been so worried. But now… Shen Qingzhou's aura was too imposing. He had even said "a knife for a knife"?

“I, I didn’t do it on purpose, it jumped at me…”

“Do you know the consequences of not telling the truth?” Shen Qingzhou looked down at him condescendingly.

The little boy looked up at him, on the verge of tears. After a long standoff, he finally broke. “I’ll tell… I shouldn’t have scared it. I scared it first, but I didn’t think it would really get hurt, mister, I won’t do it again, I really won’t do it again.”

“There’s a next time?” Shen Qingzhou’s tone, when speaking to him, didn’t treat him like a child at all. “Hurting others with a knife is assault. Don’t think you can do whatever you want just because you’re a child.”

Tears rolled down the boy’s face like glass beads. Anyone unaware of the situation, watching from afar, would definitely think it was a case of bullying. But those close by, including the boy's parents, didn't dare to step forward and intervene.

“I’m sorry…” Although the boy was young, he realized the mistake he had made. After this experience, he would definitely not dare to be so mischievous again.

“Don’t apologize to me.” Shen Qingzhou looked towards the operating room, his expression impassive. “You should repent to it. Oh, repent outside the operating room. Don’t let Hongdou see you again; it might be frightened.”

“Hey, Mr. Shen.” The boy’s mother found this ridiculous, but as she was about to speak, her husband stopped her. The man bowed to Shen Qingzhou. “I’m truly sorry. I’ll be responsible for all medical and follow-up expenses. It’s my fault for not disciplining my child properly.”

Shen Qingzhou nodded slightly to him, then his gaze fell on the woman. Under his stare, the woman's expression turned ugly. After a long while, she finally managed to squeeze out the words, “Sorry.”

At this moment, to everyone's surprise, the little boy silently ran to the door of the operating room and began murmuring apologies.

Yu Wan looked at the boy’s figure in surprise, then at the family who didn't dare to utter a word. She suddenly admired Shen Qingzhou. His ability to command respect was truly much greater than hers…
