Chapter 10: Chapter 10

Wu Tong stepped out of the Civil Affairs Bureau, momentarily blinded by the sunlight. Instinctively, she raised a hand to shield her eyes. Qin Ge, noticing this, shifted his body to cast his shadow over her face.

“How did you get here?” Qin Ge asked, glancing at the couples holding hands as they entered and exited the bureau, a nagging feeling that something was missing from his own marriage ceremony.

“Subway,” Wu Tong replied, lowering her hand, oblivious to Qin Ge’s thoughtful gesture. She took a half-step back, trying to find a comfortable position in the shade.

“Are you busy?” Qin Ge asked, seemingly not noticing her subtle attempt to distance herself.

“I have somewhere to go, but it’s not urgent,” Wu Tong said.

“Then come with me somewhere,” Qin Ge suggested.

“Where?” Wu Tong looked up.

“Just come with me.”

Qin Ge led the puzzled Wu Tong to a red motorcycle. He placed the only helmet on her head, a little too forcefully. Wu Tong couldn't help but cry out softly from the impact.

“Are you alright?” Qin Ge froze, his hand reaching out as if to remove the helmet.

“I’m fine,” Wu Tong quickly retreated two steps.

Qin Ge didn’t say anything more, but he made a new mental note about Wu Tong: My wife is a bit delicate; I need to be gentler.

It was Wu Tong’s first time on a motorcycle. She sat cautiously on the back seat, gripping the metal frame tightly. As Qin Ge started the engine, Wu Tong swayed uncontrollably, her face paling instantly.

Qin Ge turned the motorcycle around, facing the entrance, and put his foot down. With a slightly exasperated look, he reached back and pulled Wu Tong’s hands from the frame, guiding them around his waist.

Wu Tong struggled, but Qin Ge’s grip was too strong. He held both her hands captive with one of his.

“Hold on tight,” Qin Ge’s voice was firm.

“I…”

“We’re married,” Qin Ge looked back at her. “You need to get used to my touch.”

Wu Tong blinked, and then her arms around his waist finally relaxed.

Qin Ge rode fast, weaving through the traffic like a nimble fish in the sea of vehicles. Wu Tong clung tightly to his lean waist. The faster he went, the tighter she held on, until her entire body was pressed against his back, her nose filled with his masculine scent.

Feeling the tightening embrace and the softness against his back, a smile slowly curved Qin Ge’s lips. His eyes sparkled with amusement as he accelerated.

The motorcycle left the main road, turning into several smaller alleys. The surroundings gradually became quieter. After a few more turns, the bike finally came to a stop.

“We’re here,” Qin Ge said, stopping the engine.

Wu Tong quickly dismounted and took off the heavy helmet. She looked up at the building before her. It was a courtyard house with traditional architecture. Seeing the vermillion gate and the wide courtyard walls, Wu Tong guessed that the house must be quite large.

Qin Ge parked the motorcycle, walked to the gate, took out a key, unlocked it, and pushed it open with a firm hand.

Wu Tong followed him up the steps, standing outside the gate, gazing at the vibrant courtyard and the swing beneath the parasol tree.

Qin Ge took Wu Tong’s hand and led her into the courtyard. Standing under the shade of the tree, he asked, “Do you like it?”

“What is this place?” Wu Tong asked.

“Our new home,” Qin Ge replied. “We’ll live here from now on.”

“Here? Don’t we live at Emerald Hills?” Wu Tong asked, confused.

“Do you want to live there?” Qin Ge’s tone was ambiguous.

“No, it’s just… I didn’t expect us to live here,” Wu Tong said. “I really like it here.”

“Good,” Qin Ge said. “My mother found this place for me. The house is big, with two courtyards, front and back. This is the front courtyard. The back courtyard is a bit smaller, and there’s a ginkgo tree there. It’s supposed to be beautiful in the autumn.”

“Want to see inside?” Qin Ge asked.

Wu Tong nodded. They entered the house. It was a single-story building in a traditional style. Apart from the bright glass windows, almost everything else was made of wood. Despite being only one story, the tiled roof kept the interior cool.

Wu Tong looked around and noticed the emptiness. “Why is there nothing in the house?” she asked.

“My mother just moved out yesterday,” Qin Ge replied.

“Why?” Wu Tong was puzzled.

“She said you might prefer to decorate the new home yourself,” Qin Ge explained. “It’s also to give us something to do together.”

Wu Tong smiled, noticing Qin Ge’s gaze fixed on her. “Then we’ll go shopping together when we have time.”

“Okay,” Qin Ge’s eyebrows lifted in a smile.

After touring the house, they went to the back courtyard. It was similar to the front, but with the addition of a small artificial fishpond, where a few colorful fish swam. Beside the pond were many pots of small flowers whose names Wu Tong didn’t know. She was drawn to them and crouched down to examine them closely.

Qin Ge stood beside her, quietly watching. The sunlight shone from the side, casting a golden glow around Wu Tong, making her seem so beautiful that even a strand of her hair could stir his heart.

“It’s so beautiful here,” Wu Tong said with a delighted smile, her eyes shining with unconcealed joy.

“I’m glad you like it,” Qin Ge crouched beside her, his gaze following her fingertips as they traced the petals of the flowers, her nails translucent in the sunlight.

Wu Tong smiled and nodded, her fingers gently caressing a flower bud.

“When are you planning to move in?” Qin Ge suddenly asked.

“Huh?” Wu Tong froze, the joy fading from her eyes. “We’ll buy furniture and things first, and then we’ll move in.”

“When will we go shopping?” Qin Ge asked.

“When are you free?”

“I’m free every day,” Qin Ge replied.

Wu Tong stood up and looked at the ginkgo tree in the distance. We could buy a hanging chair and put it under the tree, she thought. “I’ll call you when I’m free,” she said.

“Alright,” Qin Ge nodded casually.

Wu Tong walked to the ginkgo tree, imagining the beautiful golden leaves in autumn.

“You’ve decided on the travel dates, so I’ll plan the itinerary,” Qin Ge suddenly said.

Wu Tong recalled their discussion at the café about their honeymoon. She had set the travel date for a month later to allow time to care for her younger brother. She had no objections to Qin Ge planning the itinerary.

“Okay,” Wu Tong agreed with a smile.

“Is there anywhere you particularly want to go?” Qin Ge asked.

“I’ll leave it to you,” Wu Tong replied.

“Then give me your passport later,” Qin Ge said.

“Okay.” Wu Tong felt a little embarrassed about leaving everything to Qin Ge. She gave him a small smile, unaware that her dazzling smile under the sunlight was incredibly alluring in Qin Ge’s eyes.

Qin Ge could no longer control the beast within. He pressed Wu Tong against the smooth trunk of the ginkgo tree, devouring her like a hungry wolf finally savoring a long-awaited feast.

After the initial stiffness, Wu Tong’s body gradually softened. The marriage certificate is signed; what’s the point of being coy? she thought. Looking into his wild eyes, she blinked, then slowly closed her eyes and parted her lips.

As if discovering a new continent, Qin Ge finally released her lips, his tongue delving into her mouth, entwining with hers, sucking desperately until they were both breathless.

Qin Ge’s grip on her waist tightened, as if he was struggling to control himself.

“How long do you need to prepare?” Qin Ge suddenly asked.

Wu Tong was taken aback. After a moment, she remembered their conversation at the café, where she had asked him to give her some time to adjust. She didn’t know how long she needed, but this waiting period was unfair to Qin Ge, considering his desire for her.

“I…”

“One month… Let’s nurture our feelings during this month,” Qin Ge said, gazing into her eyes. “I don’t want us to still be sleeping in separate rooms during our honeymoon.”

Wu Tong didn’t know how to respond, but she knew his request wasn’t unreasonable. Finally, she nodded.

Qin Ge seemed pleased. He released her and said with a smile, “I’ll take you home.”

Qin Ge rode Wu Tong back home. She stood downstairs, watching him disappear through the neighborhood gate on his motorcycle. The setting sun cast a melancholic glow on her slender figure.

Life is never exactly how you want it to be. If you are content with your current life, it must be because you are willing to embrace it. Just like Wu Tong at this moment, she was willing to try and accept Qin Ge.

Change and adaptation are always difficult. She hoped happiness would come after the struggle.

Wu Tong forced a smile, picked up her bag, and headed to the hospital to visit her brother.

When Qin Ge returned to Emerald Hills on his motorcycle, the Qin family was eagerly awaiting news. Seeing him, their eyes lit up with anticipation.

“The certificate is done,” Qin Ge announced casually.

“Where’s Wu Tong?” Qin’s mother was surprised to see her son return alone.

“Wu Tong had something to do, so I took her home first,” Qin Ge explained. “Also, we plan to go on our honeymoon in a month and move into the new house after we return.”

“But I haven’t even met my daughter-in-law yet,” Qin’s mother said, realizing her son wasn’t planning to bring Wu Tong back.

“How about we have dinner together, both families?” Qin Huai suggested.

“Whatever,” Qin Ge said, heading straight upstairs to Fei Fei’s room.

The Qin family exchanged glances. Was Qin Ge happy or not?

Qin Ge knocked on his son’s door and then pushed it open. Fei Fei was sitting on the floor, assembling a jigsaw puzzle, as expected. Qin Ge sat down and watched for a while before taking out the marriage certificate and spreading it open in front of Fei Fei. “Fei Fei, this is your future mother.”

Fei Fei glanced at it briefly before returning his attention to the puzzle.

Qin Ge picked up the certificate and, staring at Wu Tong’s photo, began to talk to himself.

“Actually, she wasn’t happy today. She thought she hid it well, but she couldn’t fool me,” Qin Ge said. “I shouldn’t care, really. After all, it’s a marriage of convenience, and we both agreed to it. Who is she trying to impress with her unhappiness?”

“But… when she looked at our new home with such joy, when she touched the flowers in the pots with such delight, her smile was so damn captivating,” Qin Ge reminisced. “Then, when I asked her when she was moving in, the light in her eyes disappeared, replaced by a forced smile. It irritated me.”

“So I kissed her.” Qin Ge glanced at Fei Fei. “Do you know what a kiss is? Not like when an adult kisses a child, but a man kissing a woman, a very intimate act.”

“At that moment… I felt like I was losing control. The thought of her not wanting to be with me made me want to be closer to her, to remind her that we’re married, that she’s mine now, and whether she likes it or not, she has to get used to my presence and my touch.”

“This feeling is strange, something I’ve never experienced before. Logically, I know it’s wrong, but I can’t control myself. And… after I did it, I felt satisfied. Am I sick? Should I go see Dr. Li again?”

“I have this uncontrollable urge to do certain things, but I’m afraid of hurting her. What should I do?” Qin Ge’s expression was filled with confusion. “Today, when she hesitated, I almost…”

Crash…

Fei Fei finished the jigsaw puzzle. He looked at it for a second, then flipped it over, scattering the pieces across the floor.

Qin Ge glanced at the scattered pieces and suddenly smiled.

When I kissed her today, she seemed to respond.
