Chapter 4: Chapter 4

Qin Ge, driving his modified jeep, arrived back at Emerald Mountain Estate quite late.

“Big Brother.” Qin Huai had long since heard the sound of his older brother’s jeep pulling up. He waited until Qin Ge approached before calling out.

“Qin Huai, why aren’t you asleep yet? Don't you have work tomorrow?” Qin Ge glanced at his watch in surprise. It was already one in the morning. Logically, his younger brother, whose biological clock was almost pathologically healthy, should have been asleep long ago.

“I'm the boss. Nobody dares to question whether I go to work or not.” Qin Huai swirled the red wine in his glass and offered, “Have a drink with me?”

Qin Ge raised an eyebrow, casually shoved his car keys into his pocket, walked over, and sat opposite Qin Huai.

Qin Huai poured Qin Ge a glass of red wine. Qin Ge took a sip, frowned, and said, “Why do all you guys who studied abroad like to drink red wine?”

“I like the taste. As for others, I don't know.” Qin Huai explained.

“What taste? It's not refreshing at all. Real men drink baijiu. I'll bring a bottle of Erguotou back another day.” Qin Ge disagreed.

“Big Brother.” Qin Huai wasn’t sure how to respond. He could continue the conversation, but he knew his brother would sense the forced nature of his words.

“Heh… I’ve spent too much time with them, I’ve gotten used to talking like this.” In truth, Qin Ge had long since realized that his family seemed somewhat unable to bear his overly blunt words and actions. Although they never said anything, the awkwardness in their eyes couldn't escape him.

Qin Huai knew exactly who “they” were. Ever since his brother joined the army, the two brothers had gradually grown distant. It wasn’t like when they were young, always chatting, playing ball, and even discussing girls together. Often, Qin Huai felt that his brother was closer to his comrades than to him, his own brother.

“Big Brother, why did you become a special forces soldier in the first place?” Qin Huai asked.

“I went to a military academy. Isn’t it normal to become a special forces soldier?” Qin Ge gave his younger brother a strange look.

“That's true.” Qin Huai smiled. “It's just that I feel you've changed a lot since you came back. We used to have so many common interests.”

“So, do you think it was caused by being in the army, or by being sick?” Qin Ge swirled his wine glass, seemingly unconcerned.

“Big Brother, you've already recovered.” Qin Huai disliked how Qin Ge constantly treated himself like a patient.

“Is it really meaningful for you all to keep brainwashing yourselves like this every day?” Qin Ge gave a self-deprecating laugh. “If I were truly recovered, would you all be tiptoeing around me all the time? Would Mom be running around arranging blind dates for me?”

“Big Brother!” Qin Huai didn't want to hear his brother talk about himself like that.

“I know what you're going to say. Actually, during this time at home, I've long since realized that I'm somewhat out of sync with this family.”

“Big Brother, this is your home, the place where you grew up!” Qin Huai couldn't help but shout. He really disliked his brother's attitude of treating himself as an outsider.

“What are you doing? Keep your voice down…” Qin Ge was startled. He raised a hand in a calming gesture. “Don't get excited.”

“I don't want to hear you say things like that. This is your home. What do you mean, out of sync? How are you out of sync?”

It had been a long time since Qin Ge had seen his younger brother lose his composure, especially since he took over Qin Corp. The look of having everything under control that he wore every day really made his opponents want to punch him.

“Stop hypnotizing yourself. I'm ultimately different from you all.” Qin Ge smiled bitterly and poured himself another glass of wine.

Qin Huai had always wanted to ask what kind of experience had turned his resolute, courageous, and carefree older brother into what he was now.

“From now on, the family will depend on you, and so will the company.” Qin Ge said.

“If you want to join the company…”

“Hold on…” Qin Ge raised a hand to stop his brother. “I’m still counting on living off dividends for the rest of my life. You actually think I'd join the company?”

Qin Huai thought for a moment and then asked, “Let’s not talk about the company. What about Feifei? Do you really not plan to send him to a special school?”

“I've said it before, Feifei isn't sick. He just doesn't want to talk.” Qin Ge's voice suddenly turned cold. He asked, “What, does the young miss you’re arranging this marriage with have a problem with Feifei?”

“No.” Qin Huai said. “Speaking of marriage, Big Brother, do you really want to get married?”

“Didn't you already draw up the contract?”

“I don't care about the contract. Even if I throw away this five hundred million, I wouldn't care. Because Mom said you wanted to get married, I proposed this marriage arrangement. But… I still want to ask for your thoughts.” Qin Huai said.

“Mom wasn't wrong. I agreed to get married.” Qin Ge smiled. “The psychiatrist also suggested I get married, even encouraged me to find a girlfriend, but the chances of me finding one myself are slim. A marriage alliance is the most direct and fastest method. I don't object. I've met the person, and she's quite pleasant to look at. I don't really have any requirements. It was Mom who insisted on finding someone with good qualifications. I'm afraid she’ll marry in and then cry and clamor for a divorce after a couple of days.”

“That won’t happen!” Qin Huai said with absolute certainty.

“I hope so.” Qin Ge shrugged, seemingly unconcerned.

“Mom has invited Miss Wu for dinner next Wednesday.” Qin Huai said.

“Got it. I'll be back early that day.” Qin Ge smiled. “She is my future wife, after all.”

Monday.

The Wu family anxiously awaited the final results of the bone marrow matching. Finally, the door to the laboratory opened, and the attending physician emerged with a smile. “Congratulations. One out of the three samples is a match. It’s Wu Kai.”

Upon hearing the doctor’s words, Wu Tong’s tears flowed instantly. She grasped her younger brother Xiaoyuan’s hand, her voice choked with emotion. “Xiaoyuan, Xiaoyuan, did you hear? It’s a match!”

“Mm, I heard.” Faced with the hope of survival, no patient would be unhappy.

Second Uncle Wu and his wife exchanged a glance, a calculating look flashing in their eyes.

“Xiao Kai, thank you, Sister thanks you, truly…” Wu Tong turned and grasped her cousin Wu Kai’s hand, overcome with emotion once again.

“It’s nothing, it’s nothing. Xiaoyuan and I played together when we were little. I’m very happy to be able to save him.” Wu Kai chuckled.

“I know you’re all very happy, but Xiaoyuan’s condition can’t wait any longer.” The doctor turned to Wu Kai. “If you’re certain about donating bone marrow, there are still many tests to be done, and you may need to be hospitalized for a few days.”

“Doctor, when will the surgery be approximately?” Second Aunt Wu asked.

“Well, if all goes smoothly, the surgery can be performed this weekend.” The doctor replied.

“So soon?” Second Aunt Wu exclaimed.

“It’s not that soon, considering the patient’s condition isn’t optimistic.” The attending physician gave a few more instructions and then went back to work.

Wu Tong escorted her brother back to his ward. As Second Uncle's family was leaving, they asked Wu Tong to come to their house that evening. Wu Tong didn't think much of it and agreed.

8 PM, living room of Second Uncle Wu’s villa.

Wu Tong looked at her Second Uncle and Second Aunt sitting opposite her in disbelief. “Second Uncle, what… what did you mean just now?”

“Let me explain.” Second Aunt Wu took over the conversation, getting straight to the point. “Your Second Uncle’s company has run into some problems and needs to cooperate with Qin Corp. to overcome this crisis. However, Qin Corp. has one condition for cooperation: a business marriage with their eldest son. The meeting at the Emperor Hotel the other day was actually a blind date.”

“But what does that have to do with me?” Wu Tong asked, puzzled.

“How does it not have anything to do with you? If you hadn’t suddenly barged in that day, the eldest son of the Qin family wouldn’t have taken a liking to you. Now he’s specifically requested that you marry him.”

“Second Uncle, I really didn’t do it on purpose that day. I can go apologize to the Qin family and explain things clearly to them. Besides, I’m just your niece. The marriage alliance between Wu Corp. and Qin Corp. doesn’t really have much to do with me.” Wu Tong said.

“No way!” Second Aunt Wu immediately refused loudly. If Wu Tong were really allowed to explain, would there still be any hope for this marriage alliance?

“But how can I steal the man my cousin likes?” Wu Tong said.

“It’s just a marriage of convenience. Zhizhi doesn’t like Young Master Qin.” Second Aunt Wu said. “So you don’t need to feel any burden. Just marry him. The Qin family is wealthy and influential. It’s a match many people would beg for.”

“But I don’t want to get married yet.”

“Then you…” …can forget about us donating bone marrow. Second Aunt Wu’s unspoken words were interrupted by Second Uncle raising his hand.

“Tongtong, Second Uncle’s company has really encountered a big problem. Without this cooperation, it’s very likely to go bankrupt.” Second Uncle said earnestly. “Originally, this matter had nothing to do with you. We were planning to have Zhizhi enter into the marriage alliance. You were there that day. If you hadn’t suddenly barged in, things wouldn’t be so complicated. But since things have developed to this point, Second Uncle hopes you can help Second Uncle, just like we’re helping Xiaoyuan.”

Boom!

Just like we’re helping Xiaoyuan.

Just like we’re helping Xiaoyuan.

Second Uncle Wu’s words exploded in Wu Tong’s mind like a bomb, over and over again. Wu Tong’s hands trembled, and her voice quivered as she spoke. “Do you mean… if I don’t help you, you won’t help Xiaoyuan?”

“Second Uncle doesn’t want things to develop to that point.” Second Uncle Wu’s tone was full of sincerity.

“What’s with that look on your face? The Qin family isn’t some fiery pit of despair, and your Second Uncle isn’t harming you.” Second Aunt Wu couldn’t stand Wu Tong’s mournful expression despite having gained such an advantage. “If Young Master Qin hadn’t taken a liking to you, you wouldn’t even have the chance to marry into such a family.”

“So, if Young Master Qin hadn’t taken a liking to me, would he have taken a liking to my cousin?” Wu Tong asked with a cold laugh.

Wu Tong was quite clever. Thinking back on the change in her Second Uncle's family’s attitude towards her, from being rejected at the door every time to proactively going to the hospital for matching, and their current attitude, if she had truly stolen her cousin’s chance to marry into a wealthy family, how could they possibly be so polite to her?

Although she didn’t understand why the Qin family had requested her to marry in, she could be certain that the Qin family definitely hadn't taken a liking to her cousin.

“Tongtong, Second Uncle knows that this is a bit sudden, but Xiaoyuan’s surgery needs to be done as soon as possible, and Second Uncle’s company can’t wait any longer.” Second Uncle Wu said.

Wu Tong’s relationship with Second Uncle’s family wasn’t particularly close. Her parents were both university professors. Their family wasn’t poor, but they were at most comfortably well-off, and couldn’t compare to her businessman Second Uncle. Second Aunt Wu had always been fond of comparing herself to others, and Wu Tong and her cousin Zhizhi had often quarreled when they were young. If it weren’t for Xiaoyuan this time, the two families would probably have already cut off contact.

It was true, why should anyone help you unconditionally?

“Even without this matter, we would still save Xiaoyuan, it’s just…” Second Uncle Wu wanted to say something more to make this situation seem less like a transaction.

“Second Uncle, don’t say anymore. I agree.” Wu Tong suddenly said.

“What?” Second Uncle Wu and his wife were stunned, seemingly not expecting Wu Tong to agree so readily.

“You’re right. You’re my Second Uncle. We’re family. I’m already very grateful that you’re helping me save Xiaoyuan. Since Second Uncle’s company is facing difficulties, I naturally want to help if I can.” Wu Tong said.

“That’s wonderful.” Second Uncle Wu said excitedly.

“However, before Xiaoyuan’s surgery, I’m not in the mood for marriage.” Wu Tong added.

“Of course, of course. But this Wednesday, Mrs. Qin has invited us over for dinner.” Second Uncle Wu said.

“Oh.” No wonder they were so eager. “I’ll be there that day.”

After Wu Tong left Second Uncle Wu’s villa, she looked up at the starless night sky.

She had shed enough tears for Xiaoyuan during this period. There was no need to shed any more tears for these relatives. What was wrong with it being a transaction? After all, no one owed anyone anything.

From another perspective, her future husband was, in a way, her benefactor. If it weren’t for him taking a liking to her, Second Uncle wouldn’t be saving Xiaoyuan.
