Chapter 5: Chapter 5

Wu Tong emerged from her younger brother's hospital room and, turning, saw her cousin Wu Kai standing there, smiling at her.

“Xiao Kai, why are you here?” Wu Tong asked.

“I had a whole day of tests and finally have some free time now, so I came to chat with Xiao Yuan,” Wu Kai replied, glancing at the ward. “Is Xiao Yuan asleep?”

“Yes, he just fell asleep,” Wu Tong answered.

“Then I'll come back tomorrow,” Wu Kai said, abandoning his plan to chat with his cousin.

“Xiao Yuan also had a bunch of tests today, so I haven't had time to see you. Was it very tiring?” Wu Tong asked.

“I'm fine. The nurses and doctors are the busy ones, along with my mom fussing around. I'm just responsible for sitting or lying down,” Wu Kai said with a smile. Suddenly, he seemed to remember something and asked, “Right, Second Sister, you went to my house yesterday. Did my parents say anything to you?”

“Nothing much,” Wu Tong replied with a smile.

“I know my own parents. They must have asked something of you. But don't mind them,” Wu Kai said. “Xiao Yuan is my little brother too. I will definitely save him.”

“Thank you,” Wu Tong's smile warmed. “But it's really okay. You should go back and rest early. I need to go home too.”

“Alright, goodbye, Second Sister.”

Wu Tong watched Wu Kai's receding figure. Although she didn't know if her cousin was truly unaware of her uncle and aunt's intentions, at least Wu Kai's words added a touch of warmth to this cold, transactional arrangement.

Wednesday arrived in a blink of an eye. Second Aunt Wu had been busy since morning, taking Wu Tong to pick out clothes, apply makeup, and style her hair. Wu Tong simply smiled at her aunt's flurry of activity and cooperated. Gazing at the increasingly refined woman in the mirror, Wu Tong felt a sudden daze. It seemed like a long time since she had put this much effort into her appearance.

“A woman really should know how to dress herself up,” the makeup artist said with satisfaction, putting down her blush brush and admiring the work she had done all afternoon.

“Indeed,” Wu Tong agreed, nodding.

“Are we done?” Second Aunt Wu walked in, checking the time.

“Yes,” the makeup artist replied, turning Wu Tong's chair to face her aunt. “Miss Wu is incredibly beautiful.”

“Fine clothes make the man, as they say,” Second Aunt Wu remarked, scrutinizing Wu Tong. Although her tone was somewhat sarcastic, she seemed generally satisfied.

“Can we go now?” Wu Tong asked, standing up.

“Let's go. Your Second Uncle's car is already at the entrance,” Second Aunt Wu said, turning to leave.

Wu Tong politely smiled at the makeup artist before following her aunt.

After the two left, the assistant ran over to gossip. “I heard that the Wu family is going to have a marriage alliance with the Qin family. It seems it's this young lady. But… why isn't there any joyful atmosphere?”

“She's marrying the eldest son, not the second,” another assistant remarked.

“Sigh, being a wealthy heiress isn't easy. This Miss Wu is quite beautiful, but it's a pity she's marrying an unromantic soldier,” the first assistant said regretfully.

“Your perspective is outdated,” the makeup artist said, joining them. “What era are we in? Women should dress up for themselves. 'A woman makes herself beautiful for the one who pleases her' is a characteristic expression of female dependence on men.”

7 PM, the Qin residence.

At the rectangular dining table, the Qin and Wu families sat on opposite sides. Across from Wu Tong was Qin Ge, the eldest son of the Qin family. Beside Qin Ge sat the renowned second son, Qin Huai.

Perhaps because their eldest son was finally getting married, Mr. and Mrs. Qin were in high spirits. Second Uncle and Second Aunt Wu were deliberately ingratiating themselves, so the dinner was quite lively.

“Wu Tong, I hear your parents are intellectuals?” Mrs. Qin hadn't had the chance to observe Wu Tong closely at the hotel before, but tonight she had been discreetly appraising her. Wu Tong's fresh beauty and elegant demeanor greatly pleased her.

“Yes, my parents are both university professors,” Wu Tong replied with a smile, putting down her cutlery.

“So you come from a scholarly family?” Mrs. Qin exclaimed.

“Mrs. Qin, I'm not boasting, but our Wu Tong has always excelled in her studies. She's the typical 'child of other families.' She also plays the flute,” Second Aunt Wu interjected with a smile.

Wu Tong glanced at her aunt, smiled, and offered no rebuttal.

“Are you still in school?” Mr. Qin asked.

“No, I've been working for two or three years,” Wu Tong politely replied.

“That's right, our Wu Tong is a fashion designer,” Second Aunt Wu added. “She opened her own studio and is quite capable.”

“Oh, so young and accomplished!” Mr. Qin praised.

“Mr. Qin, you flatter me. I just draw designs at home. It's not really a studio,” Wu Tong quickly clarified, lest her aunt exaggerate too much.

Qin Ge, who had been silently eating while observing the three across from him, suddenly chuckled softly.

“What are you laughing at?” Mr. Qin felt his son's laughter was somewhat impolite at that moment.

“Nothing. I'm just happy. I didn't expect my future wife to be so capable,” Qin Ge said, raising an eyebrow at Wu Tong.

Unable to decipher the meaning behind Qin Ge's smile, Wu Tong simply returned a quiet smile.

As dinner concluded, Qin Ge suddenly offered to drive Wu Tong home. The Qin family was surprised but also delighted. Second Uncle Wu naturally wouldn't object, so Wu Tong found herself in Qin Ge's jeep.

The elegant dress seemed oddly out of place in the rugged jeep. Wu Tong didn't understand why the eldest Qin son had suddenly decided to drive her home. She simply gave him her address and sat quietly in the passenger seat.

The jeep sped through the night, traversing half the city before stopping in front of Wu Tong's apartment building.

“Thank you for driving me back,” Wu Tong said politely, opening the car door and stepping out.

“Miss Wu.”

Wu Tong turned to see Qin Ge, who had also gotten out of the car. He was leaning against the hood of the jeep, looking at her with an amused expression.

“You can call me Wu Tong,” she said. If they were destined to be together, then they might as well start by becoming more familiar with each other's names.

“Wu Tong?” Qin Ge said, tapping his fingers unconsciously on the jeep's metal body. “If nothing unexpected happens, we'll be married soon.”

“So?” Wu Tong asked, puzzled.

“So… how much do you… know about your future husband?” Qin Ge asked.

“Is there anything I particularly need to know?” Wu Tong inquired.

“Of course,” Qin Ge suddenly said with a hearty laugh. “For example… what if I'm sick?”

“You look very healthy,” Wu Tong said, frowning slightly.

“Healthy people can get seriously ill,” Qin Ge winked.

“…” Wu Tong lowered her head and thought for a moment before seriously saying, “Whether you are sick or not, I will marry you.”

“For five hundred million?” Qin Ge asked.

“For my family,” Wu Tong replied. She didn't care what this marriage alliance would bring to her Second Uncle. She only knew that no amount of money could buy back her brother's life.

“You cultured people certainly have a way with words, much better than us rough folks,” Qin Ge said admiringly.

"For money" and "for family"—it made the whole situation sound much more noble.

Since the conversation had reached this point, Wu Tong curiously asked in return, “The Wu and Qin families have their reasons for this marriage alliance. What about you?”

“Me?” Qin Ge pointed to his head, smiling oddly. “Because… I'm sick.”

Wu Tong's expression cracked. This man might actually be sick—mentally ill.

After speaking, Qin Ge didn't look at Wu Tong's reaction. He rummaged through his pockets, pulled out a business card, and handed it to her. “If you have time, I suggest you meet the person on this card. She's my psychiatrist. Then… think carefully about whether you want to marry me.”

With that, Qin Ge didn't linger. He got back in the car, started the jeep, and drove away.

Under the dim streetlight of the complex, Wu Tong looked at the plain white business card in her hand: Blue Ocean Psychotherapy Studio, Li Yunjing.

A psychiatrist?

He really is mentally ill!?

The Qin family was surprised to see Qin Ge offer to drive Wu Tong home. Mrs. Qin was so moved she nearly teared up. Clutching her husband's hand, she said, “See? See? I told you introducing Qin Ge to someone was a good idea. Look, he even knows how to do something thoughtful like escorting a girl home.”

“Qin Huai, did you prompt him?” Mr. Qin asked, still somewhat disbelieving.

“No,” Qin Huai shook his head. He himself was also taken aback. “Perhaps, Big Brother really likes this Miss Wu.”

“He must like her,” Mrs. Qin said excitedly. “Once they get married and start a new family, Qin Ge's lingering issues will surely be resolved.”

“I hope so…” Mr. Qin said with a hint of worry. “But I wonder if this Miss Wu can truly live happily with Qin Ge.”

“Yes…” Mrs. Qin also became concerned. “She seems like an excellent young woman.”

“Mom, Dad, you don't need to worry about that,” Qin Huai said. “Don't forget, this is a marriage alliance.”

Mr. and Mrs. Qin looked at their shrewd and capable second son and understood the implication of his words. Although they felt a pang of sympathy, ultimately, everyone has their favorites.

When Qin Ge drove back home, he again saw his younger brother drinking alone and admiring the moon in the courtyard.

“If you have something to say to me, just give me a call. You don't need to sit here with a bottle of wine every day,” Qin Ge said with a smile, sitting down and pouring himself a drink.

“Big Brother, what did you say to that Miss Wu?” Qin Huai asked directly.

“Do you have to be so perceptive? Could it be that you like her?” Qin Ge teased.

“Big Brother!” Qin Huai didn't appreciate this kind of joke.

“Alright, alright, I hate this about you, your overly analytical mind,” Qin Ge said, deciding not to hide anything. He stated frankly, “I gave her Dr. Li's business card.”

“Big Brother, you…”

“If we're really going to get married, she'll find out sooner or later,” Qin Ge said, swirling his wine glass and finishing the last of his red wine. “You should drink less too. I'm going to see Fei Fei now.”

After his elder brother entered the house, Qin Huai thought for a moment, then took out his phone and called his special assistant, Lin Wei. “Tomorrow, go to the Wu Corporation… and apply some more pressure.”

“Yes, Mr. Qin.”

Qin Huai was a successful businessman, but he didn't believe money could buy everything. It's just that humans are often driven by various circumstances to a point of no return.

His role was to ensure that after paying the price, the other party couldn't easily back out. An agreement made under such circumstances was often the most stable.

After a night of contemplation, Wu Tong stood at the entrance of Blue Ocean Psychotherapy Studio early the next morning.

At the same time, Special Assistant Lin and Qin Corporation's legal counsel were seated in the Wu Corporation's conference room.

Second Uncle Wu looked at the contract the lawyer handed him, particularly the additional clause:

(During the cooperation between Qin Corporation and Wu Corporation, Ms. Wu Tong does not have the right to divorce. If Ms. Wu Tong insists on divorce or engages in behavior that harms the marital relationship, Qin Corporation will immediately withdraw its investment and reserves the right to demand full compensation for economic losses from Wu Corporation.)
