Pampering My Husband Every Day
Chapters ListChapter 8: Chapter 8
Wu Tong bought a band-aid at a small pharmacy by the roadside and put it on before daring to go to the hospital. Almost as soon as she entered her younger brother's ward, the sharp-eyed Xiao Yuan spotted it.
“Sister, what happened to your mouth?” Xiao Yuan asked with concern.
“It’s nothing. I accidentally bit it while eating this morning,” Wu Tong replied calmly.
“How could you be so careless?”
“I was thinking about your surgery tomorrow while eating, so…” Wu Tong made a plausible excuse.
“Sister, you don't have to worry. The doctor said the success rate of the surgery is very high,” Xiao Yuan, his attention successfully diverted, began to comfort Wu Tong instead.
“Once you’re better, you can go back to school,” Wu Tong smiled.
“That's right. It shouldn't be long since school started. I've even managed to avoid military training,” Xiao Yuan chuckled happily.
“Just you wait, you'll have to make it up next year.” Wu Tong looked at the time. “I'm going to see Xiao Kai.”
Wu Tong left Xiao Yuan's ward and walked towards the VIP ward Second Uncle had arranged for Wu Kai. When she reached the door, she heard Second Aunt's voice inside. Wu Tong knocked and waited for the conversation to stop before pushing the door open.
“Second Aunt, Cousin, I came to see Xiao Kai,” Wu Tong said with a smile.
“Second Sister, you’re here! Want an orange?” Wu Kai, pretending not to see his mother glare at him, offered a peeled orange to Wu Tong.
“Thank you.” Wu Tong took the orange but didn't eat it. “You’re having surgery tomorrow, how are you feeling?”
“How could I be feeling good? You try having your blood drawn continuously for hours,” Wu Zhizhi said irritably.
“Sister, what nonsense are you talking about?” Wu Kai retorted. “If they drew blood for hours, I’d be dead. The doctor said it's for separating hematopoietic stem cells. Anyway, I don't really understand it, but the doctor said there's no danger. I'll just eat more pig liver to replenish my blood afterward.”
“Mom will definitely make sure you get plenty of nourishment later,” Second Aunt said with distress.
“Well, you rest well. I’ll go back to Xiao Yuan,” Wu Tong said. Seeing that Second Aunt and her cousin weren't very happy to see her, she decided to leave.
“Second Sister, take some oranges back for Xiao Yuan,” Wu Kai said, pointing to the fruit basket on the table.
“I bought some for him too. You keep these for yourself.” Wu Tong turned and left the ward, but after only a few steps, Wu Zhizhi, who had followed her out, called out.
“Cousin.” Wu Tong stopped and turned around, puzzled.
“Your mouth is all broken, and you're still eating oranges?” Wu Zhizhi’s eyes were fixed on Wu Tong's chapped lips, her tone laced with innuendo.
“You’re right.” Wu Tong glanced regretfully at the perfectly peeled orange in her hand and tossed it into a nearby trash can.
“You…” Wu Zhizhi seemed enraged by Wu Tong’s action. “What do you mean by that?”
“Didn’t you just remind me that I shouldn’t eat oranges because my mouth is sore?” Wu Tong asked innocently.
“Don't play dumb with me. You know perfectly well what I meant,” Wu Zhizhi snapped.
“Then what did you mean?” Wu Tong asked.
“I'm just reminding you, you're about to marry Eldest Young Master Qin. Stop flirting around outside. If there's anything going on, end it quickly. Don't drag us down with you for no reason,” Wu Zhizhi said haughtily.
Tomorrow was her brother's surgery, and Wu Tong really didn't want to argue with them at this time. She took a few deep breaths, deciding to ignore Wu Zhizhi, and turned to leave.
“Feeling guilty now, are you? Let me remind you, the Qin family is a prestigious and wealthy family. You're already incredibly lucky to be marrying into it. You better cherish it,” Wu Zhizhi said.
Wu Tong stopped again, turned sideways, and said to Wu Zhizhi, “If Cousin wants to marry him herself, I can step aside right now.”
“Who wants to marry him?” Wu Zhizhi didn't want to marry that sick man.
“Right… Even if you wanted to, it depends on whether the Qin family is willing,” Wu Tong scoffed.
“What are you so smug about? Qin Ge is just a discarded son of the Qin family. Everyone knows that the Qin family is just buying a wife for Eldest Young Master Qin,” Wu Zhizhi retorted, her anger flaring.
“Then aren’t you even more pathetic? They didn't even buy you even though you offered yourself up.” Wu Tong flung this sentence at her and, ignoring the hysterical Wu Zhizhi behind her, quickly turned and left the VIP ward area.
Qin Residence.
When Qin Ge returned, he saw Father Qin and Mother Qin playing with Fei Fei in the courtyard.
Father Qin and Mother Qin were sitting in the shade, having afternoon tea, while Fei Fei was playing with a jigsaw puzzle nearby.
“You’re back? How did the discussion go?” Mother Qin asked eagerly as Qin Ge approached.
“Very smoothly,” Qin Ge said, sitting next to Fei Fei and watching him work on the puzzle.
“What do you mean by very smoothly?” Mother Qin asked, puzzled.
“She agreed with my suggestion. No wedding ceremony, just a honeymoon,” Qin Ge said. “You can find someone to pick a date, and we'll just go get the certificate.”
Mother Qin exchanged an incredulous look with her husband.
“Fei Fei, how about we go fly a kite over there?” Qin Ge saw that Fei Fei had almost finished the puzzle and guessed he must have been sitting for a long time, so he wanted him to move around a bit.
Fei Fei immediately put down the puzzle pieces and looked up at Qin Ge.
Qin Ge understood immediately that Fei Fei had agreed. After lifting the child down from the chair, they walked hand-in-hand to the distant lawn to fly a kite.
“What does Qin Ge mean? Is he really not having a wedding?” Mother Qin still couldn’t believe it. “Wu Tong actually agreed? No, I have to call and ask.”
“Just calm down. Don't make things worse by interfering,” Father Qin said.
“Qin Dongming, what do you mean by that?” Mother Qin exclaimed, using Father Qin's full name, clearly displeased.
“Qin Ge never wanted a wedding in the first place. Now that Wu Tong has agreed, why do you insist on having one?” Father Qin asked.
“Why else? Haven’t you heard what people are saying outside? They say Qin Ge is mentally ill, that he beats his wife, that we’re focusing all our efforts on cultivating Qin Huai and treating Qin Ge like a discarded son. If we don't hold a wedding to prove them wrong, aren't we admitting it’s true?” Mother Qin grew more and more agitated as she thought about the rumors.
“What’s more important, the children’s happiness or gossip?” Father Qin said. “You know Qin Ge has always wanted to move out. He rarely agrees to anything, and now he’s willing to get married. He’ll have someone to take care of him. Just stop meddling.”
“But I'm still worried,” Mother Qin said. “Maybe I should talk to Wu Tong privately.”
“Why can’t you understand?” Father Qin said. “Even though Wu Tong is a wife we’re getting through an arranged marriage, once she’s in the door, she’s family. If we treat her like family, she’ll have a good life with Qin Ge. Qin Ge already has a bad temper. If you interfere, what will Wu Tong think?”
“But, can she truly care for Qin Ge?” Mother Qin was still worried.
“Stop worrying about it,” Father Qin said. “They have to live their own lives.”
Although Father Qin had persuaded her, Mother Qin still looked anxiously at Qin Ge and Fei Fei on the lawn. Qin Ge's illness still had lingering effects, and Fei Fei hadn't spoken a word yet. Could these two really live well on their own after moving out?
“Fei Fei, Daddy is getting married,” Qin Ge said, sitting beside Fei Fei as he held the kite string.
“You’ll have a mommy soon. Are you happy?” Qin Ge knew Fei Fei wouldn't answer him, but he knew he could hear. “You’ve met her before. It was at the Emperor Hotel a little over half a month ago. You were so shy you hid when you saw her. So… you don’t dislike her, right?”
Fei Fei kept looking up at the kite in the sky, silently.
“Daddy has met her a few more times. Hmm… as for what kind of person she is, Daddy hasn’t figured it out completely, but like you, Daddy doesn’t seem to dislike her.”
“Since neither of us dislikes her, let’s give her a chance,” Qin Ge turned his head and looked at Fei Fei’s profile. “We’ll live together from now on and try our best to accept her.”
As if Qin Ge’s gaze lingered for too long, Fei Fei finally turned his head and glanced at his father before looking back up at the kite.
“It seems you agree too.” Qin Ge smiled happily. “Fei Fei, you know Daddy has a bad temper. If Daddy yells at Mommy in the future, you have to protect her.”
“If you don’t protect her, and she gets scared away, it’ll be troublesome.”
Fei Fei turned his head and glanced at his father again, his eyes carrying a rare hint of confusion, as if asking why he would yell at Mommy.
“Daddy is sick. This sickness makes him impulsive and gives him a bad temper,” Qin Ge explained. “But Daddy definitely doesn't do it on purpose.”
Having received an explanation, Fei Fei looked back up at the kite.
“After Grandma chooses a wedding date, we’ll move out after our honeymoon. Then we’ll have our own little home,” Qin Ge said. “Dr. Li said there’s still hope for us. Once we get used to our new family life, slowly, you’ll be willing to talk, and I won’t be so irritable anymore… Do you think it will really happen?”
“Hmm… Actually, I think it’s also possible Wu Tong will become like us.” Qin Ge blinked, finding the image rather amusing.
Early Sunday morning, Wu Tong went to the hospital. Today was Xiao Yuan's surgery day, a day Wu Tong had been looking forward to for a long time. She hadn't slept a wink last night.
The hospital had arranged to collect hematopoietic stem cells from Wu Kai in the morning, followed immediately by Xiao Yuan's surgery.
Although the doctor repeatedly assured her that the surgery was low-risk, Wu Tong still waited anxiously outside the operating room all afternoon. It wasn’t until Xiao Yuan was wheeled out, and the surgeon nodded, confirming the surgery's success, that tears of joy streamed down her face.
At that moment, holding her brother's pale hand, Wu Tong was once again certain that whatever the price, this moment was worth it.
“Wu Tong.” Second Uncle had been waiting outside Xiao Yuan’s ward and approached Wu Tong when she came out.
“Second Uncle, thank you. How is Xiao Kai?” Wu Tong asked.
“Xiao Kai is fine. He’s just a little weak. The doctor said he needs to rest for a while, and he’ll be fine.”
“That’s good. I’ll go see him.” With Xiao Yuan’s surgery immediately following, Wu Tong hadn’t had a chance to visit Wu Kai.
“No need. He’s already asleep. Your Second Aunt is with him,” Second Uncle stopped her.
“Oh…” Wu Tong realized that Second Uncle hadn’t stayed with Xiao Kai but had come to find her instead, which meant he had something to say. “Second Uncle, is there something you wanted to talk about?”
“Cough… well… is Xiao Yuan alright?” Second Uncle asked awkwardly.
“He’s fine. The doctor said all his indicators are normal, but he still needs to be monitored for a while,” Wu Tong replied.
“That’s good… that’s good…” Second Uncle hesitated.
“Second Uncle, just say what you want to say,” Wu Tong urged, seeing his hesitant expression.
“Well… Mrs. Qin just called and confirmed the wedding date with your Second Aunt.”
Wu Tong’s expression didn’t change much as she waited quietly for her uncle to continue.
“They said you and Qin Ge are having a honeymoon instead of a wedding ceremony, and that you should go get your marriage certificate next Wednesday,” Second Uncle said. “They said it’s an auspicious day, suitable for marriage.”
“Okay, I understand,” Wu Tong replied calmly.
If life already leaves you with no choice, then at least don't let yourself become more pathetic.
